What Does Mead Taste Like?

What Does Mead Taste Like?

Mead is an alcoholic drink that has been around for centuries, not just in medieval media such as Game of Thrones. In fact, there is evidence of mead consumption dating back 4,000 years! Also, if you want to read more about the history of mead, follow this blog post.

Mead is made by fermenting honey with water, and can be flavored with various fruits, spices, or other herbs. Mead is refreshing on the palate and without being overly astringent. Specifically, however, fruit meads are called melomels, and spiced meads are called metheglins.

So, what does mead taste like? Mead is a bit of an acquired taste, but once you get used to it, it is quite delicious! It has a sweet, honey-like flavor that is perfect for sipping on a hot summer day. And if you are looking for something a little different, there are many fruit and spice-flavored meads on the market that are sure to please your palate.

For the most part, meads can genuinely vary in flavor as it depends on the amount of honey used, how long it fermented, and, perhaps most importantly, how long it aged. An important aspect to the overall taste experience with mead, however, also lies in the source from which the bees made their honey. For example, orange blossom honey is honey bees made from nectar taken from orange blossoms which, in turn, gives the mead an orange-like taste.

Grapes, in general, have many varietals that make for different-flavored wines. The same applies to honey. Honey created from different from flowers result in different tastes. Factor in the addition of different fruits or spices, or a combination thereof, results in an even more different flavors.

However, with all that being said, a traditionally-created mead is caramelly in nature with evocative tastes to the source flower. Meads can from dry to sweet, low to high alcohol, thin to full mouthfeel. All in all, it is a real treat for the mouth.
