Wine with Keto Diet

Wine with Keto Diet

The keto diet is a high-discipline diet that helps one lose weight, but it can leave asking yourself if you can drink wine knowing that sugar is needed to make wine, and sugar means carbs and calories. It can be twice as worrying if you are a hobbyist winemaker. Short answer? You can drink wine. Here's how it works.

The keto diet is a low-carb, high-fat lifestyle that focuses on moderate protein content to help you lose weight. When you keep your carbohydrate intake low enough, your body will enter ketosis. This is when your liver uses stored and consumed fat to produce ketone molecules for energy instead of glucose. In other words, your body is literally powering itself.

Some people might think that because the keto diet is a high-fat diet, it is okay to go overboard with the wine drinking, however, this is not the case. While you can still enjoy wine while remaining in ketosis, but it will slow your progress (not erase it). This is because when you drink alcohol, your liver drops everything it was doing to process the alcohol quickly as possible. So, drinking a glass of wine will not knock you out of ketosis or reset your progress. You can drink wine while on the keto diet, but not all forms of wine are equal in the diet’s eyes.

There are several wines that have little to no carbohydrates. Dry wines are the best choice when it comes to keto-friendly options. These include Brut, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc, and, of course, the older the wine, the better. In addition to choosing the right wine, moderation is key. Try to stick to one (or two) glass per night and you should be fine.

If you want to enjoy wine while on the keto diet, go ahead! Just be mindful of what kind of wine you’re drinking and how much you consume. Cheers!
